New Year Holiday is coming!
There are a lot of traditions of celebrating New Year in Russia and the countries of Former USSR. But what is interesting - most of them are borrowed from western culture. It has 2 reasons: firstly, the arrival of Christianity in the Slavic Russia completely or almost completely was destroyed the pagan tradition of meeting the New Year and seeing the old. Secondly, the nobility and gentry in Russia were imported into the new western traditions, which subsequently was copied the common people and became popular.
Moreover, every era's brought something new. We got the masks, clowns and buffoons from the time of the Slavic paganism. The epoch of Peter I and subsequent rulers and reformers brought the Christmas tree with toys, fireworks, Santa Claus and New Year's table (delicacies such as salad and vinaigrette). A country of the Soviets gave us Santa Claus with the Snow Maiden, mandatory Champagne with tangerines on the table and fight Courant.
We wish you Happy New Year!
