The 1st of June, an International Children’s Defense day popular among Russian women |
Children’s Defense day celebrated on the first day of summer for some reason was particularly famous in the former USSR, especially among schoolchildren who associated defense of children with the beginning of long summer holidays. Schoolchildren went to the beach or the banks of the river and lakes to “defense” themselves from importunate teachers.
The first of June is one of the oldest international holidays. The decision about celebrating it was adopted by the International democratic federation of women in 1949. The first International Children’s Defense day was held in 1950. U.N.O. supported this initiative and declared the defense of rights, life, and health of children as one of the priority lines of its activity. Nowadays Russian women think of this holiday beforehand and prepare special presents for their children. So don’t forget to make a small nice surprise for the kid of your foreign penpal.
