Mary and Chris.
Yes, this story started just like many others of this kind. Mary was a young girl already battered by life: she had to bring up a baby son absolutely alone, without any support from the outside.
Actually, he left her pregnant, left just like a thing he did not want anymore and he never even tried to see his son. Mary spent the lonely nine months of her pregnancy like we occasionally read in novels: sometimes she had to go to sleep without eating anything, sometimes her tough daily bread was really just bread because she could not afford anything else.
Her friends made her believe, that there is a man living somewhere on this planet meant to her. So she decided to submit her profile to a dating service and place it online.
Mary felt her heart had dried up and there were no feelings to her former partner anymore. However, a new relationship seemed as almost impossible. It is hard for a woman to recuperate after such a blow. Igor (her son) was very small, and the insult still hurt. Still, Mary had her photos made and submitted them to a dating site.
Chris wrote her almost every day. Of course, she got other letters, but his warm words about her son touched her very much. He was substantially older than her and had a lot of different experiences in his life. Still, he hadn’t had a chance to become a father although he had been married. His wife decided on sterilization without telling him about it she did not need children.
This was probably why he felt attracted to Mary who was bringing up a baby alone without any support. Her soul felt like a desert, but sometimes we do not know our own souls well enough. They started corresponding, and letter after letter he melted her heart, which seemed to be frozen forever.
Her life appeared to have had a fresh start. His first call, the sound of his voice, the first flowers and chocolates that he sent she was beaming with happiness. And then another blow of fate came. He stopped writing. Mary tried to write, to find out what had happened, why did he dissappear without any reason, at once. But there was no answer.
The blow was so cruel that she ran away from the beautiful city where she was betrayed twice. She went to live with her relatives in a village not far from Kiev, where she stayed for more than a year. The pain seemed to subside, and her friends wanted to see her, so she came back to the city, which was connected with so many events in her biography.
By pure accident (how many things happen by accident in our lives?) Mary met her former neighbour. She asked her about her life and offered to write a letter to Chris. Mary refused: she did not want to disturb the old pain. But her friend insisted and said that she would write from her own name. So she wrote. About Mary, about her history, about the hope lurking in those desperate eyes.
And Chris replied! He wrote that more than a year ago he was deeply shocked by a letter that he got from some stranger. How this stranger found out about their love, nobody knows. Probably someone was envious of Mary’s undisguised happiness. This person wrote to Chris that Mary was living with another man while corresponding with him. He wrote that they were making fun of the naive American that was so pathetic in his efforts to help the single mother.
It does not really matter why this letter was written and where it came from. The only thing is that Chris called and wrote again, and again sent flowers and chocolates. Then he came, and the three smiling people (Igor was in raptures over Daddy Chris) took walks in the city. There was happiness, the world seemed to contract, consisting of the three of them, and there were his beseeching eyes when he said to her one evening: Marry me.
Mary had another son just on the day of Chris’s birthday. Chris turned out to be a great father. He has a stressful job full of responsibilities, but when he comes home he starts fussing over his younger son (Igor soon became the older son), changing his nappies and talking to him. May God grant them happiness! |
