Don’t you find it strange the name of this holiday – the Old New Year? Be sure, your russian girlfriends know why it is called that way and they even celebrate it every year in the middle of January. The Old New Year celebrated 13 of January is the Orthodox New Year and it is an informal tradition to celebrate the beginning of the New Year by the Julian calendar that was in use in Russia till 1918. After 1918 the Soviet government adopted Gregorian calendar and Russian people started celebrate New Year’s Day January, 1. Since then Russians started to celebrate New Year’s Day twice: according to the new style and the old one. By the force of habit Russian and Ukrainian people celebrate New Year’s coming two weeks later and call it Old New Year’s Day. It is not a day off in Russia nevertheless people gather to celebrate the holiday, to greet each other and to make fireworks.
