Jan’19 - Orthodox Epiphany |
Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian and Serbian Orthodox Churches celebrate Epiphany (the end of the Christmas season) on Jan’19. It comes from a Greek word meaning show or reveal.
Epiphany is the third and the most important holiday of the New Year-Christmas period. It is one of the most ancient holidays of Christian Church (its establishment is dated from the time of apostles). Ancient name of the holiday – «Epiphanius» is the appearance or «Teofaniya» is Epiphany.
During the Epiphany Day the most important tradition is the blessing of a large body of water. People cut a large cross of ice in the river
(lake) and they mark the place of service with it. At the end of the service the priest tosses a wooden cross in the water. There is the belief that holy water would bring love, honesty and marriage to those who are the first taking from it. Everybody drinks from the hallowed water.
